President Mas oversees the constitution of the new Management Board of the Institut Ramon Llull

This Thursday, the President of the Generalitat de Catalunya, Artur Mas, overseesthe constitution of the new Management Board of the Institut Ramon Llull, as a result of which Barcelona City Council will become a member of the Consortium. The meeting to constitute the Institut's chief governing body is being held following the Catalan government's approval on 28 January of the modification to the statutes whereby Barcelona City Council will join the Generalitat on the IRL Consortium, representing a refounding of this institution. The meeting will also be attended by the Mayor of Barcelona, Xavier Trias; the Catalan Minister for Culture, Ferran Mascarell; the Deputy Mayor for Culture, Knowledge, Creativity and Innovation, Jaume Ciurana; and the Director of the IRL, Àlex Susanna.


In joining the Consortium, the City Council will be ceding the Palau del Baró de Quadras, on Avinguda Diagonal in Barcelona,to the IRL for use as a centre. The building, constructed in the early 20th century by Puig i Cadafalch, is one of the finest examples of Catalan Modernisme.

In accordance with the new statutes, the Institut Ramon Llull, set up to raise awareness of the Catalan language and culture in all their expressions, will support the culture-related external relations policies of the two Consorci members and will contribute to the strengthening of the Catalan Culture, Catalonia and Barcelona brands from a cultural perspective.

The members of the Management Board of the IRL representing the Generalitat, in addition to the President and the Minister for Culture, are: Antoni Castellà, Secretary of Universities and Research; Roger Albinyana, Secretary of External Affairs and the European Union; Pilar Pifarré, Secretary-General of Culture; Jordi Sellas, Director-General of Creation and Cultural Enterprises; and Ester Franquesa, Director-General ofLanguage Policy. The member of the Management Board of the IRL representing the City Council, in addition to the Mayor and the Deputy Mayor for Culture, Knowledge, Creativity and Innovation, will be the Head of the Culture, Knowledge, Creativity and Innovation Division, Marta Clari. The other members of the Management Board are: the President and the General-Secretary of the Institut d'Estudis Catalans, Joandomènec Ros and Romà Escalas; the President and Deputy President of the Xarxa Vives d'Universitats, Fabrice Lorenteandi Joan Viñas; the Dean of the Institució de les Lletres Catalanes, Francesc Parcerisas; and the Director of the IRL, Àlex Susanna.
