Àlex Susanna, new director of the Institut Ramon Llull

The Minister of Culture, Ferran Mascarell, has this afternoon appointed Àlex Susanna as the new director of the Institut Ramon Llull, after director Vicenç Villatoro resigned from the post.


Àlex Susanna, writer, critic and cultural manager

Born in Barcelona in 1957, he lectured in Catalan literature and Theory of Literature at Rovira i Virgili University (1982-1992). As a cultural entrepreneur and manager, he founded and directed the Columna publishing house (1985-1999) and the Columna Música record label (1997-2000). He was the founder and director of the Barcelona International Poetry Festival (1984-2000), director of culture at the Institut Ramon Llull (2002-2004), from where he backed Catalonia’s candidatures as guest country at the Guadalajara and Frankfurt Book Fairs, and where since March 2011 he has been associate director. He was also the director of the Fundació Caixa Catalunya (2004-2009) and director of culture of Obra Social “la Caixa” (2009-2011) at La Pedrera, where he promoted a large programme of international exhibitions and contemporary music.

His creative work consists of ten books of poems, translated into numerous languages, four volumes of diaries and translations of authors like T. S. Eliot (Four Quartets, 2010), Apollinaire (Calligrammes, 2009), Valéry (Monsieur Teste, 1982), and Aragon (Irene, 1980). He is also the author of monographs and art criticism, a member of the European Academy of Poetry, and in 2008 he was appointed Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government.
