Niall O’Gallagher
Niall O’Gallagher was born in Scotland in 1981. He is a poet writing in Gaelic and a translator working in the country’s three languages: English, Gaelic and Scots. He holds a degree in English and Scottish Literature from the University of Glasgow, where he also completed a doctorate on the fiction of Alasdair Gray. He has published three collections of poetry in Gaelic and the book Fuaimean Gràidh / The Sounds of Love (‘The Sounds of Love’, London: Francis Boutle Publishers, 2023), a selection of his poetry with English translations by other poets.
He has published English translations of poetry by Josep Carner in the prestigious London journal Modern Poetry in Translation. A Scots translation of the poem ‘Cançó de Fer Camí’ by Maria Mercè Marçal (‘Journey Sang’) was published in the national newspaper The Scotsman to mark the 70th anniversary of the Catalan poet. He is the editor of the anthology Bàrdachd a’ Bhaile Mhòir: 15 Glasgow Poems (Edinburgh: Blue Diode, 2024), which brings together the hidden Gaelic poetry of Scotland’s largest city, with translations into English and Scots. His translations of the Gaelic poetry of Crìsdean MacIlleBhàin (Christopher Whyte) appear in the book Ceum air Cheum / Step by Step (Stornoway: Acair, 2019), which was shortlisted for two national awards.
He is currently Writer in Residence at the University of Edinburgh. He has a special interest in strict-metre poetry and in fiction that goes beyond realism. He lives on Scotland’s west coast with his wife and two children, and regularly visits the Catalan Countries. When not working, he plays the viola; he especially enjoys the music of Bach, Mahler, and Bartók, among others.
