Archit. & design.  Venice, 13/06/2022

The Institut Ramon Llull opens the call for proposals to curate the participation of Catalonia and the Balearic Islands at the 18th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice.

The Institut Ramon Llull opens the call for proposals to curate the participation of Catalonia and the Balearics within the Eventi collaterali program of the Biennale Architettura 2023. The event will be held from Saturday 20 May to Sunday 26 November 2023. Under the theme The Laboratory of the future, chosen for the appointed Artistic Director, Lesley Lokko, the present edition will focus on Africa: “There is one place on this planet where all these questions of equity, race, hope, and fear converge and coalesce. Africa. At an anthropological level, we are all African. And what happens in Africa happens to us all”. Lesley Lokko (Ghana/Scotland) is an architectural academic, educator, and novelist. According to Lokko, “The vision of a modern, diverse, and inclusive society is seductive and persuasive, but as long as it remains an image, it is a mirage. Something more than representation is needed, and architects historically are key players in translating images into reality.”

The competition is organized in two stages. The first phase is a call open to all professionals and companies interested in submitting proposals to meet the requirements included in the competition brief. Entries for the first phase shall include the curriculum vitae and a proposal of a maximum of 2 pages with the general ideas of the project, as well as the requested legal documents. The deadline for the first phase of the two-stage competition is Wednesday 29 June at 23.59 h.

A committee of experts will select a maximum of three proposals to participate in the second stage. The selection will be announced from Wednesday 6th July. The shortlisted candidates shall present a proposal developing the content and formal approach stated in the first stage, a proposal for the design of the exhibition, and a budget. The deadline is 18 July. Within a week, on the 25 July, candidates shall defend their proposals in front of the committee of experts. On the same day, after the hearing of the proposals, the committee will deliberate and the title of the winning project will be announced.

The committee of experts of the Edition is formed by:
