Non Fiction
It is 1906 and Picasso is just another Bohemian artist in Montmartre in full-on creative crisis: for the first time, he has proved unable to finish a portrait (Gertrude Stein’s faceless body weighs down on him), the Impressionists’ discoveries constrict him, Parisian life has become stifling, and photography’s explosion onto the scene questions the very purpose of painting. Picasso decides to flee on a journey of self-discovery in Gósol, a tiny, remote village in the middle of the Pyrenees. In this harsh world of smugglers and strong-handed women, our painter falls under an elusive muse’s and a Romanic Virgin Mary’s spell. Here he shall become Pau of Gósol and set out on shaping the next artistic revolution: Les demoiselles d’Avignon and the eruption of Cubism. On returning to Paris, he goes straight back to finishing Gertrude Stein’s portrait and Picasso is finally ready to become Picasso.
