Barcelona's participation in the BJDW conference program

Several speakers from Barcelona will be participating in the official BJDW conference program. On September 27th, the opening debate in the Design Forum will be chaired by Barcelona and Beijing's mayors and attended by important personalities in the fields of design and creation in Barcelona.

Some designers and creative and design professionals as well as institutional authorities and agents from the Catalan design industry will participate in the forums, debates and workshops at Beijing Design Week.

9:00 a.m. – Opening of the Beijing Design Week Forum

Several speakers from Barcelona will be participating in the official BJDW conference program. On September 27th, the opening debate in the Design Forum will be chaired by Barcelona and Beijing's Mayors and attended by institutional representatives such as Mr. Vicent Guallart, architect and representative of the Department of Urban Development and Habitat of Barcelona, Deputy Mayor Mr. Jaume Ciurana or Minister of Culture Mr. Ferran Mascarell, as well as important personalities in the fields of design and creation in Barcelona such as Architect Benedetta Tagliabue.

Some designers and creative and design professionals as well as institutional authorities and agents from the Catalan design industry will participate in other forums, debates and workshops at Beijing Design Week.

PANEL MEET THE TWIN. Post-digital design in Barcelona and Beijing

Creativity and art have always been an important part of society, culture and democracy. They have also become an increasingly important part of the economy and models for new markets and business growth.

Design, in all its forms, is one of the most important ways to understand and express creativity in a city, region or country. Barcelona is a city that inspires design, and Beijing is a city of design.

On September 30th, we will have the chance to explore several avenues of approaching the creative process through a series of panels from design studios in Barcelona and Beijing.

These two cities are practically twins and would like to get to know each other to share and develop a strong relationship. Cultural differences are a tool for creativity that merit exploring to find new ways of inspiring design.

The Meet the Twin program is an opportunity to develop new forms of creativity. The event is aimed at navigating design, media, knowledge, experience and inspiration. The program consists of a short presentation of each studio and a final panel with all the studios to follow the findings. The detailed program is as follows:

Instituto Cervantes in Beijing - A No. 1-2, Workers' Stadium South Rd, Chaoyang District, Beijing, San Yu Building

"Xi'an-Barcelona-Pekin: Paper Roads, Rivers of Ink" by Catalan artist Perico Pastor. Perico Pastor is one of the most remarkable painters of his generation. His artistic oeuvre is characterized by a fresh, intuitive style and the use of free brushstrokes. Organized by the Institut Ramon Llull in collaboration with the Instituto Cervantes, this exhibition will be open at this Instituto Cervantes headquarters in the Chaoyang District from September 24th until February 22nd, 2015.

Activities at Restaurant Migas

RESTAURANT MIGAS – "BARCELONA'S GASTRONOMY AT MIGAS"

Restaurant Migas, located in Beijing's Sanlitun neighborhood, is a creative Mediterranean cuisine restaurant and will be Barcelona's partner in the restaurant trade as guest city at BJDW. Design is an essential part of Migas, beginning with the foundation of its business model and followed by its decoration and its unique dishes, set meals, tapas and cocktails.

For BJDW, Migas will present "Barcelona's Gastronomy at Migas", a three-day gastronomic event. The project will invite Catalan chefs and cooking instructors—to design the Barcelona Menu together with Carles Tejedor, chef of Migas Restaurant. In parallel, they will recreate some of the best known areas of Barcelona like La Rambla, La Boqueria and La Barceloneta in the restaurant.

Business Mission

A commission of businesses, design and architecture studios and freelance professionals from Barcelona will travel to Beijing to establish contact with businesses and professionals from China, one of the largest and fastest growing markets in the world. This commercial mission is organized by the Barcelona Centre de Disseny (BCD) with support from ACCIÓ, an agency for the competitiveness of the Generalitat de Catalunya and Barcelona Activa, the local development agency of Barcelona City.

Some of the businesses and design studios that are part of this business mission include Dear Design, Estiluz, Magma Design, Play, Shad, Stimulo Design and Workplane Design.

Seizing upon Barcelona's participation as guest city at BJDW, the Department of Economic Promotion of the City of Barcelona has also organized numerous debates, presentations and signings of collaboration agreements with the aim of establishing contact, promoting the city's business sector and identifying new business opportunities.
