The Institut Ramon Llull Organizes Catalan Lectures in Poland

Barcelona, 04/05/2005

This year, The Institut Ramon Llull has organized for the first time a series of Catalan Lectures, geared towards students at the three universities that offer Catalan lectorship programs in Poland: Jagellons University in Krakow, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan and the University of Warsaw.

The writer, anthropologist and translator, Joan Francesc Mira, will give a lecture entitled The Borgias, an Undeserved Infamy, in Jagellons' auditorium on Wednesday and in Poznan (Friday), which will both be followed by a meeting with Catalan students.

The goal behind these activities is to increase awareness as to the consolidation of Catalan studies in Poland. This year, there are 110 Polish students studying Catalan: 71 in Poznan, 21 in Warsaw and 18 in Krakow. The lector at Adam Mickiewicz University, Alfons Gregori, will teach six Catalan courses, while the lectors of Jagellons University (Krakow) and Varsovia, Guillem Caladorra and Josep Antoni Clement, will offer three.

Catalan literature

Joan Francesc Mira's lectures follow those held a month ago, in the very same auditoriums, by the essayist, literary critic and university professor, Enric Sòria, which also dealt with Catalan literature.

The Institut Ramon Llull has published a complementary booklet to provide context for the cultural activities offered at the Polish Universities, including a poem by Maria Merè Marçal and a short story by Carme Riera, both presented in Catalan with a Polish translation. These texts are accompanied by a brief explanation on the meaning of St. Jordi's Day celebrations and a description of Catalan language and culture.

Joan Francesc Mira will give master classes in Krakow and Poznan
