World premiere of Joan Magrané with the Kansas City Symphony Orchestra

27/03/2025

The Kauffman Center in Kansas will be the setting on Saturday 5 April for the world premiere of Fortuny-Venise, the piece commissioned by the Kansas City Symphony Orchestra from Catalan composer Joan Magrané.

Joan Magrané has composed a work for large orchestra inspired by the words Fortuny-Venise, the only two that appeared on the calling cards of Mariano Fortuny Madrazo, son of the painter from Reus, Marià Fortuny. The work, written for large orchestra, was commissioned by the Kansas City Symphony Orchestra and is published by Éditions Durand.

The premiere on 5 April will be conducted by Matthias Pintscher, who has previously led other premieres of the Catalan composer such as Fragments d'Ausiàs March for five voices and ensemble, Marines i boscatges for ensemble, and Intérieur, a monodrama premiered at the Théâtre du Châtelet in 2021.

Besides Magrané’s work, the 5th Piano Concerto by Saint-Saëns (with Jean-Yves Thibaudet as soloist) and Tchaikovsky’s 6th Symphony will also be performed at the two concerts in Kansas (Saturday 5 and Sunday 6).
