Catalan Film Festival: 10 Years bringing Catalan cinema to Scotland

11/03/2025

From 8 to 30 March, cinemas in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee, and Inverness will screen 7 Catalan feature films and 9 short films and will host talks and discussions with three special guests: Pilar Palomero, Mar Coll, and Alba Bresolí.

The Catalan Film Festival is celebrating a decade of programming Catalan cinema in various Scottish cities. This year’s edition will feature 7 films and 9 short films, along with presentations and discussions with some of the directors of the scheduled films.

The central theme of this edition is the intimate and contemporary exploration of family relationships, memory, and personal transformation. Each of the films delves uniquely into complex bonds, expectations, and the dynamics that connect us.

The selection includes some of last year’s most acclaimed titles, as well as more classic works such as Tren de Sombras by Guerín, produced by Pere Portabella in 1997. From 8th to 30th March, the following films will be shown in cinemas in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee, and Inverness:

Besides the film programme, the festival will offer presentations, talks, and discussions with three of the featured directors: Pilar Palomero (who will present Los Destellos in Edinburgh and Glasgow from 25 to 27 March), Mar Coll (who will present Salve Maria in Edinburgh from 20 to 22 March), and Alba Bresolí (who will present El Bon Auguri in Inverness from 28 to 31 March). These encounters will provide an in-depth insight into their films and the Catalan film landscape.

Each year, the Catalan Film Festival selects works from international festivals such as Locarno, Toronto, Berlin, Cannes, and San Sebastián, bringing the latest Catalan films to Scottish cinemas. The programme includes award-winning feature films and notable short films, often accompanied by discussion sessions with the guest directors.
