Barcelona will be the guest of honour at the Guadalajara International Book Fair 2025

Literature.  09/12/2024

This is the first edition in which the Feria Internacional del Libro (FIL) image has been designed outside the Mexican city; it was created by the Catalan studio Bakoom, who presented their proposal during the "Passing of the Torch " ceremony.

The ceremony of the Passing of the Torch, which took place during the closing of the Guadalajara International Book Fair, started the countdown to Barcelona's presence as the guest of honour at the next edition of the FIL, which will take place from 29 November to 7 December 2025. With this symbolic act, the Barcelona delegation has taken the torch from Spain, the guest country of the 2024 edition. The image of the next edition of the FIL, designed in Barcelona by Bakoom Studio, was presented during the handover ceremony.

As is tradition, the image of the guest city will also be the image of the entire Fair. However, for the first time the graphic design has been created outside the Mexican city, and it is a recognition of the creative talent of Barcelona, a leading city in design and architecture, with a proposal that combines two elements traditionally linked to Catalan literature and culture, books and flowers, also very closely related to the Mexican city.

The presence of Barcelona as a guest city in Guadalajara, the most important cultural gathering in Latin America, coincides with the commemoration of the 10 years since it was declared a Literary City by Unesco, in 2015. The FIL is one of the world's largest literary festivals, receiving over 800,000 visitors each year. Barcelona's participation in the Mexican fair, under the curatorship of literary journalist Anna Guitart, will evoke one of Catalan literature’s greatest authors, Mercè Rodoreda, with the slogan Vindran les flors (The flowers will come). The motto was chosen for its connection with Guadalajara, known as The City of Roses, and also in reference to Saint George, that celebrates books and literature in Catalonia.
