Bestiari bids farewell to Venice with a cultural programme focused on sound art

Arts.  19/11/2024

From November 22 to 24, the Catalonia in Venice space will host several cultural activities and performances to close Bestiari, a project by Carlos Casas, curated by Filipa Ramos and produced by the Institut Ramon Llull, that took part in the 60th International Art Exhibition of the Biennale di Venezia.

Bestiari, created by Carlos Casas and curated by Filipa Ramos, concludes its presence at the Biennale di Venezia with a cultural programme that spotlights sound art, audiovisual projections and reflections on the project. The programme includes sound works and listenings by Philip Jeck, Phill Niblock and Fennesz as well as the participation of artist and composer Neil Leonard, and has been organised with the collaboration of the cultural organisation and sound art platform IKLECTIK and the audiovisual production company Touch, both London-based, and the Venetian interdisciplinary organisation Microclima, which organises the Floating Cinema - Unknown Waters festival. The renowned sound specialist Chris Watson, who created sound recordings for Bestiari, will also take part in the programme, and there will be a musical performance by the Mallorcan group Jansky.

This celebration is part of the artistic and ecological dialogue that Bestiari proposes and includes conversations, live performances, sound broadcasts and film screenings that fuse innovation with ecological awareness.

On Friday there will be a talk and a guided tour of the installation with the participation of Filipa Ramos and Carlos Casas. Afterwards, there will be a screening of three films selected by Microclima and presented by Paolo Rosso, followed by an immersive live conference by the Mallorcan duo Jansky, who will perform Insecta Dance Music/Balearic Buzzings.

Saturday evening will feature the premiere of RPM, a Philip Jeck tribute album published by Touch. This tribute recognises Jeck's profound impact on the experimental music scene. It will also celebrate the 20th anniversary of Fennesz's iconic album Venice and recognise Phill Niblock, a pioneer of minimalist sound known for his explorations of sustained tones that challenge the thresholds of auditory perception. There will also be a live performance by Neil Leonard, explorer of complex soundscapes. The closing infrasonic piece will be performed by Carlos Casas and Armand Lesecq.

On Sunday Bestiari will end with an eight-hour sound installation featuring recordings from Catalonia’s natural parks.

The planned programme is as follows:

The exhibit closes with a special session of the 8-hour sound piece created for Bestiari, which will play from 10.00 to 18.00.

Bestiari opened in Venice on April 18 and is an immersive audiovisual work in which visitors can surround themselves with a hypnotic environment of the sounds and images generated by the animals and creatures that inhabit the natural and imaginary landscapes of Catalonia. The exhibit takes as its starting point the medieval text Disputa de l'ase, written in 1417 by Anselm Turmeda, considered one of the founders of Catalan literature.

The IRL has produced and organised the participation of Catalan culture in the Eventi Collaterali of International Art Exhibition of the Biennale di Venezia since 2009.
