Miami to host the first United States exhibition of the Foto Colectania Collection

12/11/2024

The prestigious Margulies Collection at The Warehouse in Miami will host ‘Beyond the Single Image’ until 26 April. This exhibition, which features 150 works by 36 photographers spanning from the 1950s to today, is supported by the Institut Ramon Llull.

Curated by Carles Guerra, the exhibition delves into the relationship between the “single image” and the “alternative development of events” through thematic sequences organised into sections, offering viewers a window into the history and evolution of Spanish photography in an international context.

The photographs are arranged into 24 sequences across 8 sections. This layout, reminiscent of a photographic atlas, reveals an unusual quality of photography as a medium: the images converse with each other, producing new meanings and, ultimately, additional narratives that a single photograph alone could not convey.

Among the 36 photographers are iconic figures like Leopoldo Pomés, Xavier Miserachs and Ramón Masats; those from the following generation, such as Pilar Aymerich, Joan Fontcuberta, Manel Armengol, Jordi Esteva and Manolo Laguillo; and more recent names, including Laia Abril, Cristina de Middel, Txema Salvans and Adriana López-Sanfeliu.

The official opening will take place on 2 December at 6:00 pm, aligning with the start of Art Basel Miami Beach. The exhibition will be open to the public from 13 November 2024 until 26 April 2025.

Previously, the exhibition was displayed in Barcelona from January to June this year at the Foto Colectania Foundation’s premises.

Foto Colectania is a non-profit organisation established in Barcelona in 2002 with the aim of promoting photography and increasing its recognition in social, artistic and educational spheres. The foundation organises exhibitions, activities and projects centred on photography and boasts a collection of 4,000 photographs by over 80 Catalan, Spanish and Portuguese photographers, displayed at its headquarters and through an extensive touring programme.
