Culture is an open field, a space which, by definition, does not let itself be fenced in; it is unstable and generates questions; it creates new languages and references, and travels through itineraries that must be discovered and explored. The practices and disciplines involved cross and nurture each other and strive to find meaning in the human subject and its contemporaneity. In an Open Field, presents a series of essays which, from both local and international perspectives, reflect on the heterogeneous, contradictory and changing reality of 21st century culture.
Curated by Raül Garrigasait and Josep Ramoneda, it has essays by: Roger Bernat (playwright), Chiara Bottici (philosopher), Carolina Ciuti (curator of contemporary art), Gemma De les Coves (theoretical physicist), Antònia Folguera, Carles Novellas and Enric Palau (members of the Sónar festival), Eva Franch i Gilabert (architect), Michele Gazzola (expert in multilingual communication), Boris Groys (art critic and philosopher), Joan Magrané (composer), Katie Mitchell (theatre and opera director), Arcadi Navarro (biologist), Olivier Père (film critic), Perejaume (artist and poet), Albert Serra (film director) and Simona Škrabec (writer and translator).
From new mythologies to reflections on artificial intelligence; from theatre to architecture, cinema and artistic and literary creation; from sociolinguistics to science and technology, this compendium portrays what we could understand today as culture, with no attempt to restrict it or exhaust its potential.
In an Open Field. Contemporary cultural practices will be presented on 26 September at 5:15 pm on Stage 2 of the Catalan Book Week (Passeig Lluis Companys, Barcelona). A non-commercial edition of the book has also been published in English.
