Institut Ramon LLull

A large exhibition by Daniel Steegmann Mangrané at Kiasma, The Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki

Arts.  03/04/2023

The Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma in Helsinki (Finland) hosts the largest exhibition of Catalan artist Daniel Steegmann Mangrané’s work in the Nordic countries, with the support of The Institut Ramon Llull. Born in Barcelona, Steegman Mangrané has settled in Rio de Janeiro for two decades.

Deeply influenced by the socio-natural context of Brasil, the work of Steegmann Mangrané looks into ecology as a tool for analysis and transformation. Using ostensible opposite ideas such as belonging and dislocation or opacity and transparency, Steegmann Mangrané creates immersive environments bringing together visual and material elements.

Kiasma’s exhibition is a unique opportunity to engage with the artist’s work within a coherent yet diverse space and a reflection on the multiple communities and networks defining life in the planet.

Steegmann Mangrané creates sensual and playful situations which overcome artificial dualisms that historically defined our reading of the world, echoing the use of bodily, perceptual and sensorial strategies as means of political participation inspired by 1960s Brazilian artists such as Lygia Clark and Hélio Oiticica. According to the Catalan artist, such dichotomies are not only false but also hierarchical, placing mind above body, rational thought above emotion, and culture above nature, ultimately enabling noxious worldviews. In opposition, Steegmann Mangrané proposes an integrated approach to address the critical moment of ecological crisis we are currently experiencing.

The exhibition is curated by João Laia, chief curator of temporary exhibitions at Kiasma, and Hiuwai Chu, head of exhibitions at MACBA – The Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art, with Piia Oksanen, curator of temporary exhibitions at Kiasma.

The exhibition is a collaboration with MACBA, with the support of The Institut Ramon Llull. The exhibition will be at MACBA from 15th November 2023 to 24th May 2024 and will be accompanied by a publication, co-edited by Kiasma and MACBA, with the Berlin-based publishing house BOM DIA BOA TARDE BOA NOITE.
