“The NEA Literature Translations Fellowships provide crucial support, affording translators the time and means and encouragement to focus on their projects,” said the NEA’s Director of Literary Arts Amy Stolls. “In turn, these fellows will enrich our culture by bringing writers from around the world to English-speaking readers through the translators’ skill and creativity.”
In the world of Catalan literature, Anna Gual has proven herself time again as one of Catalunya’s most vital poetic voices, lauded by poets, the public and critics alike. Her work carries in it vigorous, and rigorous, contemporary - and ancient - sensibilities. Audacious expressions of intense wonder for the quotidian, as across millennia, for the body, as in the universe, keep the reader rapt. As poet Gemma Gorga muses on Gual’s poetry: we are in the wild here, and human laws are far away. Ms Gual's work presents a rare literary jewel for her generation, as for us all.
Ann Kaiser will translate into English the work of the poet Anna Gual. Gual published her first book of poems, "Implosions," after a publisher discovered her through her blog, "I'm Not Falling, I'm Throwing Myself." The collected poems, curated by the author and her editors, represent Gual's award-winning work from eight books spanning the years 2008-20, and feature her exploration of the limits of language, and of experience itself.
