'Pa negre' (Black Bread) arrived on the big screen seven years after Emili Teixidor (1933-2012) published his novel in 2003, one of the author’s most highly acclaimed works. It was also a box-office hit at the cinema, directed by Agustí Villaronga (Mallorca, 1953), who incorporated into it elements from other books by Teixidor, Retrat d'un assassí d'ocells and Sic transit Glòria Swanson.
On 26 October, the British public will have the opportunity to see the film at the University of Liverpool in the UK at an event supported by the Institut Ramon Llull. The Iberian and Latin American Film Festival is being organised by the university in the British city with the aid of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
The work tells of life in the post-war years from the perspective of Andreu, a teenager growing up in the Plana de Vic and living with his father’s relatives in a farmhouse while his mother works in a factory and his father is in prison for being a republican. Villaronga’s film, made in 2010, swept the board, winning 13 statues at the Gaudí Awards and a further nine Goya Awards, among them the prize for the best film, best director and best adapted screenplay. In addition, it was shortlisted as a possible nomination for the Academy Award for the Best Foreign Language Film.
