Missing, presumed dead, he returns eight years later to find a family deeply affected by his disappearance. Starring Sergi Lopez, one of Catalonia’s most internationally renowned actors, and directed by real-life partners Isa Campos and Isaki Lacuesta, this thriller revolves around the question of Gabriel’s identity and examines the impact that his sudden return has on the lives of others. The gorgeous Pyrenean countryside has never looked as gloomy and dark as in this film.

Director Rudy Gnutti analyses the effects of globalisation with the participation of important world figures like sociologist Zygmunt Bauman, the ex-President of Uruguay José Mújica, and economists Mauro Gallegati and Tony Atkinson amongst others. Produced by Pere Portabella, famous for his avant-garde cinema and his political documentaries, the film skillfully combines the opinions of the men on the street with the expert analysis of specialists. Some harsh truths are described, but there is also room for hope, it is in our hands.

THE ONE-EYED KING, Dir Marc Creuhet
A young man, who lost his eye to a rubber bullet in a street protest, and his partner are invited to a dinner party.  The husband of the host is a riot policeman, who has fired rubber bullets whilst carrying his duties. This is just one of the many awkward moments that arise during the dinner in this hilarious dark comedy, which touches on contemporary, political, and social issues, set against the backdrop of the financial crisis suffered in Southern Europe. The four leads are outstanding, but look out for the superb comedic skills of Miki Esparbé, who is one of the main actors of the two Barcelona films we screened last year.

UNCERTAIN GLORY, Dir Agustí Villaronga
The film Black Bread was a big success in our first ever Camera Catalonia strand, and so we are very proud to present the new film made by the same director and production team, which again is set against the background of the Spanish Civil War.  Uncertain Glory is an adaption of one of the most important works of Catalan literature, which was influenced by the writer's own experiences during the tragic and fratricide war.  Filmmaker Villaronga once again shows his skills in depicting extreme human relations and how the instinct of survival amidst the ills of a war can bring out the worst in many individuals, whilst a few manage not to succumb to the physical and moral destructions that surrounds them everywhere.
