Toni Cumella studied industrial engineering at the University of Barcelona before devoting himself entirely to pottery from 1970 onwards. After his father’s death in 1985 Cumella redirected the activity of the Ceràmiques Cumella workshop towards the creation of architectural projects and large-scale works of art.

From 1989 to 1992 his workshop was commissioned with two major architectural works; the restoration of Gaudí’s Casa Batlló (together with the architect Josep Botey) and that of Gaudí’s Park Güell (with architects Martínez Lapeña and Elías Torres). He has also collaborated in numerous projects such as the Diagonal Mar park and the Santa Caterina market, the Spanish pavilions at Expo 2008 and various installations with artists Frederic Amat, Joan Fontcuberta and Pep Duran.

Toni Cumella’s workshop is currently working on projects together with architects Renzo Piano, Esteve Bonell, Carme Pinós, Kengo Kuma and Amanda Levete.
