Sònia Sánchez and Roger Bernat perform in the fifth Chantiers d’Europe Festival in Paris

Performing.  Paris, 03/06/2014

Sònia Sánchez and Roger Bernat are the Catalan artists invited to the fifth multidisciplinary Chantiers d’Europe Festival organised at the Théâtre de la Ville de Paris between 3 and 28 June. The festival is designed to introduce new ideas about the forms of representation and relations with the audience, as well as new generations of European artists. This year artists from the countries of Southern Europe have been invited.

Sònia Sánchez will present the dance show The Fold from 14 to 21 June at various landmark venues in the city: the Parc de la Villette, the Théâtre des Abbesses, the Berges de Seine, the Jardins du Luxembourg and the Théâtre de la Ville itself. In this work, which had its first performance in 2012, the ballerina focuses on internal and external memory, sounds and silences, melodies and dissonances, passion and understanding, attitudes and gestures. With more than 33 years working in the world of dance and music, Sánchez is still committed to her dance, related to flamenco but probing into new forms of creation, composition and transmission of the art. In that way, not forgetting the roots, the choreographer and dancer develops a new style based on the tools of Body Weather and flamenco.

Roger Bernat will be presenting the participative show Public Domain on 28 June at Le 104 municipal cultural centre. The work is like a life-sized board game in which the spectator is one more piece. The theatrical creator gets the audience together in a square and makes them walk whilst they listen to a series of questions and instructions through earphones. From there the work develops freely, forming small communities, small groups, that reflect the patterns of society today. Bernat’s works have neither actors nor stage sets, and the audience cannot identify with the people and objects that should appear on the stage. They become the actors of the show, deciding to be part of it or not, and it is constructed from their reactions. The spectators do not have the privilege of observing the show from outside; they can choose not to take part, but they will still be members of the audience and what Bernat calls a device. It is a new way of doing theatre, which totally involves the audience at the works.

This is not the first collaboration between the Institut Ramon Llull and the Théâtre de la Ville. They worked together in May last year on a concert by La Troba Kung-Fú at the Paris venue. A year ago, the theatre also programmed the show Bach by the Mal Pelo company.

Chantiers d’Europe is an internationally renowned festival engaged in promoting different artistic disciplines such as dance, circus or music. One of the aims of the encounter is to promote the diversity and originality of European artistic creation by inviting different countries to take part, in this case those of Southern Europe. For four years Chantiers d’Europe has focused its gaze on independent artists and companies of the new generation, with the aim of giving them a start to their international careers. Moreover, the festival provides the audience with a wide range of shows of great quality and very different origins, which serve to promote and accompany artistic creation and cultural diversity.
