Els Amics de les Arts and Matthew Tree star in a celebration of Catalan culture in Glasgow to coincide with the Celtic-Barça match

Music.  Glasgow, 05/11/2012

On Wednesday, 7th November, the band Els Amics de les Arts and the writer Matthew Tree will feature in a celebration of Catalan culture in Glasgow, to coincide with the Champions League match between Celtic and Barça. This is the first ever joint project to be organized as part of the agreement between FC Barcelona and the Institut Ramon Llull (IRL) for the promotion of Catalan culture abroad.

All the events will take place at the University of Glasgow, which is offering Catalan Studies courses with the support of the IRL. The schedule of events is as follows:

- 10 a.m. Carles Vilarrubí, Vice-chairman of FC Barcelona, will give a talk entitled “Barça: sport, culture and education” at Randolph Hall at the University of Glasgow.

He will be explaining how Barça is a vehicle for the recovery of Catalan identity and an instrument for the integration of newcomers to Catalonia. He will also set out the club’s values, which include teamwork, effort, respect, humility and tolerance.

- Midday. Talk by Matthew Tree, writer, entitled: “How Catalonia has become what it is. The perspective of a long-term resident”, at Randolph Hall at the University of Glasgow.

In just under an hour, the British writer who has lived in Barcelona for the last 28 years will be explaining what Catalonia is like today and the reasons behind the huge pro-independence demonstration on 11th September.

- 1 p.m. Els Amics de les Arts will give a concert at Queen Margaret Union at the University of Glasgow.

Els Amics de les Arts is one of the finest exponents of the so-called new wave of Catalan folk-pop. Their songs tell everyday stories backed by simple melodies, with plenty of wordplay and irony and the inclusion of elements of electronica.

- 3 p.m. Supporters clubs meeting and debate on “Football and Barça, passion and culture” at Randolph Hall at the University of Glasgow.

Chaired by Jimmy Burns, a sports reporter specializing in Barça and a member of the London supporters club; Mateusz Szczepanski, representative of the Polish FC Barcelona supporters club; Adam Brown, vice-president of the Penya Union Blaugrana in Perth (Australia); and Josep Barnils, director of the FCB Social Area and in charge of international supporters clubs.

The University of Glasgow has offered Catalan Studies courses since 1992. The School of Modern Languages and Cultures at the University of Glasgow offers Catalan language courses each year, along with courses on Catalan history and society to over twenty students.

The agreement signed by the IRL and FC Barcelona has a dual objective. One the one hand, to coordinate the potential of both institutions as ambassadors of the Catalan language and culture and the values of culture linked to sport and Catalanism. And on the other, to link the network of universities abroad offering Catalan studies with the international network of Barcelona Supporters Clubs, in order to carry out joint activities. Some 150 universities throughout the world now offer Catalan Studies courses.

This is the first result of the agreement between FC Barcelona and the Institut Ramon Llull
