Maria Barbal debuted with her now classic novel Pedra de tartera (Stone in a Landslide), the beginning of the series she is best known for. All of them are set in her native Pallars and from all of them, A l’amic escocès (Tom and his Scottish Friend).is the most recent instalment. Her work also includes other novels and volumes of short stories, which are written for children and to be played at theatre. Over the years, she has received several awards as Crexells Prize, the 1992 Catalan Critics’ Prize and the 1993 National Literature Prize, among many others.
