Truffle is a story about two ways of loving: that of a mature man and that of the dog he is gifted. An asymmetrical and uneven love story, but also a great one in which Smith plants other plotlines that sprout and flourish, such as the marriage that grows old or the daughter and father that run away from problems. For many children who grew up in the post-war period, it has been difficult to understand parents who stubbornly looked ahead, perhaps because all they saw behind them was rubble and death. Between perplexion and amusement, Smith looks at her father and portrays his presence and absence. But she always does it with love, and the result couldn't be more exciting and liberating.
