In a totalitarian country—where the law is both impenetrable and required knowledge, and where all the inhabitants have agreed to dehumanize their underlings to the point that they become robots devoid of free will—a man searches for his missing mother. This is the crux of All the Beasts of Burden, a novel halfway between Kafka’s The Trial and 1984. Published in 1967 under Franco’s dictatorship, it is a harsh depiction of the time as well as a universal ode to freedom.
