The space SIMON 100 is hosting a round table with previous curators of the Catalan presence at the Venice Architecture Biennale

Next Tuesday, 15th May, from 7 pm SIMON 100 (C/ Sancho de Ávila, 66) will be hosting the meeting between the curators of Catalan participation at the Architecture Biennale in the last few years. Félix Arranz, Josep Torrents, Jaume Prat, Jelena Prokopljević and Isaki Lacuesta will share with the public their experiences before and after being curators of the Catalan pavilion at the Architecture Biennale, which has been promoted by the Institut Ramon Llull since 2012.

This meeting will be chaired by the journalist Pati Núñez and the architect Estel Ortega, joint curators of “RCR: Somni i natura”, the Catalan proposal for this year’s Biennale. Also taking part will be the architects Benedetta Tagliabue and the Flores & Prats studio, who will be present in the Biennale’s main exhibition. It is the second discussion in the series NEW FORMATS: DREAM AND NATURE, a parallel programme to this year’s exhibition that will be completed with three discussions to be held in Venice on 24th and 25th May during the vernissage.

The first time that Catalonia was present in its own right as an Evento Collateral at the Venice Architecture Biennale, together with the Balearic Islands, was in 2012 with Vogadors (Rowers), a project curated by Jordi Badia and Félix Arranz. Through nine projects Vogadors presented sober architecture of great material simplicity, but of enormous technical and intellectual sophistication, inspired by the Mediterranean and the idea of rowing forwards but looking back to the past.

In 2014 Arquitectures Empeltades (Grafting Architecture) was presented, a project curated by Josep Torrents with assistant curators Guillem Carabí and Jordi Ribas. Arquitectures Empeltades took as its starting point the renovation of Casa Bofarull (1913-1933), one of the most important works of Josep Maria Jujol (1879-1949). This opened up a debate on architecture in which we could identify an attitude that could be traced through many projects built in the last century, and which were based on an intense dialogue with pre-existences, whether physical or not. This allowed for the development of a project that included a mix of new and existing elements, just as the cutting is grafted on to the tree.

And two years ago, in 2016, Aftermath: Architecture Beyond Architects was presented in Venice, a proposal curated by architects Jaume Prat, Jelena Prokopljević and film director Isaki Lacuesta, which focused on architecture as it is lived, when the architects are no longer present and the users prolong the architectural experience day after day through works made in the last ten years.

The programme NEW FORMATS: DREAM AND NATURE has been organized jointly by the Col·legi d’Arquitectes de Catalunya (COAC) and the Institut Ramon Llull, and it has been made possible thanks to the sponsorship of Simon, a Catalan company manufacturing small electrical material whose main features are design and technology, and which presently sells its products all over the world.
