I Hate New York, selected for the 66th San Sebastian International Film Festival and Raindance in London, will make its North American premiere at 30th NewFest New York.
The debut feature by director Gustavo Sánchez (Úbeda, 1978) is a portrait of the lives of four trans artists, icons of the New York underground culture of the last three decades. Amanda Lepore (legendary icon, ex-member of the Club Kids, singer and muse of David LaChapelle), Chloe Dzubilo, Sophia Lamar and T De Long reveal in front of the camera their past, their experiences and their struggles for their own identity, halfway between art and activism.
The documentary was shot for 10 years (2007-2017), it is the result of hundreds of hours of raw footage, and has the executive production of J.A. Bayona (director of ‘The Orphanage’, ‘The Impossible’, ‘A Monster Calls’, ‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’). With music by acclaimed artist ARCA, as well as Academy Award®-winning composer Ryūichi Sakamoto, among others.
I Hate New York will premiere in cinemas in Spain on November 9 with Warner Bros.
GUSTAVO SÁNCHEZ (Úbeda, Spain 1978) is a journalist and filmmaker who lives in Barcelona.
At age 7, Sánchez began his path in journalism at Radio Úbeda (Cadena Ser), hosting his own radio program, which earned him the recognition of being the youngest radio host in Spain. Since then he has interviewed hundreds of people who work in music and film, and from the worlds of Spanish and international culture, for different media.
He studied Languages and Literature at the University of Granada and at the University of Aberdeen, and holds a degree in Audiovisual Communication from the University of Salamanca.
Sánchez says about his film: “ ‘I Hate New York' shows another face (in reality, many others) of transsexuality: that of nonconformist and revolutionary people who have fought to face prejudices or have left them aside, who have not assimilated to the constraints of the system but have created their own and have built their personality from artistic activism and creative disruption. This film is a vibrant and passionate defense of freedom of thought and expression. A necessary mental state of non-conformity with the prevalent limitations. A vindication of the primeval nature of creativity, of the spontaneity and uniqueness of each human being in an increasingly normalized, globalized and homogeneous world.”
