Gaziel (Agustí Calvet i Pascual)

Agustí Calvet, ‘Gaziel’ (Sant Feliu de Guíxols, 1887 – Barcelona, 1964) was a journalist and writer. In 1914, he wrote a diary about the outbreak of the Great War from Paris, where he studied and later worked as a war reporter for La Vanguardia. From 1920, he was the paper’s editor, for some 15 years. He was considered the most influential voice of the Catalan liberal bourgeoisie. He published numerous articles on European politics and relations between Catalonia and Spain. After his death, his figure was forgotten – his life and work were insightful and honest and uncomfortable for many – but in the last 20 years he’s been rediscovered and vindicated as an indisputable classic.
