Grants for the publication abroad of illustrated books

Introduction

The applicant should consult the Grant Rules and the Grant Call, given that some changes have been made with respect to previous years. The application forms filled out must be from the current year 2026.

PURPOSE

Awarding of grants to finance the expenses corresponding to the remuneration of the illustrator of illustrated Works, complying with the conditions mentioned in the rules

Editions in Catalan and Occitan (in its Aranese variety) are excluded.

The work for which the grant is requested must be covered by a contract of one of the following types:

  • Work commissioned by a foreign Publisher
  • The transfer of rights of an already-published work
  • International co-publication

The maximum amount awarded per application shall be 10.000€

In the case of co-publication, where no royalty remuneration is specified, the maximum amount awarded per application is 2.500€

Recipients

Publishers (natural person entrepeneurs or legal persons, public or private, Spanish or foreign) and foreign literary agencies that comply with the following requirements:

  • Publish the work in a language other than Catalan or Occitan (in its Aranese variant)
  • Publish the work as a print book and with commercial distribution
  • The illustrator is an individual residing officially in Catalonia or the Balearic Islands. Deceased authors will be considered residents of Catalonia or the Balearic Islands if they lived most of their lives in said territories.
  • Publish the work between the date of the resolution of the concession and November 15th, 2027.

Applicants can submit up to a maximum of six applications per call.

GRANT-SUPPORTED EXPENDITURES

It is considered as grant-supported expenditure the illustrator’s remuneration (advance) and licensing rights for the digital archives of the work (artwork / data fee).

When the author and illustrator of the work are the same person, their full compensation is an eligible expense. If they are two different people, only the illustrator’s compensation is eligible. If compensation for the illustrator is not specified, 50% of the total compensation in the contract may be considered an eligible expense.

APPLICATION SUBMISSION

The application process will be available through the Institut Ramon Llull virtual office during the period of applications of the call.

In accordance with current regulations (Spain – Law 39/2015, Common Administrative Procedure Act; Catalonia – Decree 76/2020, Regulation on Electronic Processing; Catalonia – Law 18/2020, Adaptation of Procedures to Electronic Means), the procedure must be initiated through the following channels:

 

For EUROPEAN Legal Entities:

A) EUROPEAN digital certificate:

  1. Company digital certificate
    A certificate that identifies the company, issued by a qualified certification authority and accepted by the European Union. You can consult the list of accepted certificates. 
  2. Digital certificate of the legal representative of the entity
    Identifies the natural person acting as the legal representative associated with the company, issued by a qualified certification authority and accepted by the European Union. You can consult the list of accepted certificates
  3. Digital certificate for natural persons
    A personal digital certificate, issued by a qualified certification authority and accepted by the European Union. You can consult the list of accepted certificates
    This type of certificate is accepted for legal entities when it identifies the legal representative.

B) IdCAT Mòbil

A system that allows natural persons to identify themselves digitally to carry out procedures with the Catalan public administration. This type of identification is accepted for legal entities when it identifies the legal representative. idCAT Mòbil

 

For Natural Persons and Legal Entities OUTSIDE EUROPE:

A) idCAT Mòbil

A system that allows natural persons to identify themselves digitally in order to carry out procedures with the Catalan public administration. idCAT Mòbil is accepted for legal entities when it identifies the legal representative.

 

For SPANISH Natural Persons and Legal Entities: 

They must submit their applications through the electronic headquarters, using the electronic identification and signature systems they have used up to now. There are no changes. 

 


In all cases (if not previously submitted), supporting documentation of the entity and legal representation (deeds of incorporation, statutes, powers of attorney, etc.) will be required.

SUBSTANTIATING THE GRANT

The applicant must substantiate at least 80% of the requested (and eligible) amount in order to receive the awarded grant, or the grant will be revoked.

Proof of expenditure must be submitted before 15 November 2027.

APPLICATION DATES

1st call: From February 16th to April 28th, 2026 at 23:59 (CEST)

(For works scheduled for publication between June 2026 and November 2027).

Forecasted 2nd call: From May 4th to June 18th, 2026 at 23:59 (CEST)

(For works scheduled for publication between September 2026 and November 2027).

Forecasted 3rd call: From June 25th to October 29th, 2026 at 23:59 (CET)

(For works scheduled for publication between December 2026 and November 2027).

RESOLUTION AND APPEALS

The Director of the Ramon Llull Institute will make a decision within a maximum period of six months from the date of the publication of the call.

If the maximum period has elapsed without a final decision of the procedure being issued and notified, applicants may consider their applications rejected due to administrative silence.

The decision does not exhaust the administrative process. An appeal can be filed with the head of the Department of Culture within one month from the date of publication.

    The grant applicant must be the holder of the bank account indicated on the form.

      Additional documentation, when necessary, and supporting documents can be uploaded to the IRL website through the virtual office.
