Born in Barcelona in 1978, Joan Català trained simultaneously in contemporary dance and the languages of movement and gesture and clown theatre. He studied with renowned international professionals such as Mal Pelo, Michel Dellaire, Iñaki Azpillaga or Àngels Margarit, as well as performing with companies such as La Fura dels Baus.
Català has become one of the spearheads of the new circus made in Catalonia and has performed at festivals in half the world, from the Fira de Tàrrega and the Mercat de les Flors to the Montreal Circus Festival in Canada, where he put on four performances last July, or the Greenwich+Docklands International Festival in London.
This year is the eleventh of the Alles muss raus! festival, which takes place from 14 to 16 July in Kaiserlautern, south-west Germany. This is the only street theatre festival in the country and aims to become a reference cultural inclusivity event for audiences of all kinds. Moreover, this year it is introducing new venues and artistes, the aim being to use simple language so that everyone can enjoy themselves and larger audiences will be attracted. The festival is expecting a total of 200 artistes at its venues.
To Alles muss raus! the artist is bringing the show ‘Pelat’, which was premiered at Fira Tàrrega 2013. His idea is a show that blurs the boundaries between dance, circus and theatre, and between the performer and the audience. The work is a body dialogue between the artiste and a large trunk which is supposed to symbolize the relation between man and nature and evoke the days of craftsmanship.
‘Pelat’ has won Català a number of awards, such as the jury first prize for best street show (2014) at the Miramiro festival in Ghent, Belgium, and the Zirkolika 2013 prizes.
