Five Catalan films at the tenth anniversary of the Dífferent festival in Paris

Cinema.  PARIS, 14/06/2017

Catalan production is much in evidence at the 'Dífferent, l’autre cinéma espagnol' festival, to be held in Paris from 14th to 21st June. The programme includes the first film by Carla Simón, 'Estiu 1993' (Summer 1993); the world premiere of 'Lesa Humanitat' (Lese Humanity), the documentary about the victims of the Franco regime directed by Héctor Faver; 'Cerca de tu casa' (Near Your House), by Eduard Cortés, with the participation of Sílvia Pérez Cruz; Jo Sol’s documentary' Vivir y otras ficciones' (Living and Other Fictions), and 'Spain in a day' by Isabel Coixet.

The tenth edition of the 'Dífferent! L’autre cinéma espagnol' festival comes to the Majestic Passy cinema from 14th to 21st June. Directed by José María Riba, the festival has for ten years been showing independent Spanish films that are less well known, especially in France.

In parallel, and in relation to the festival, the Centre d’Estudis Catalans at the Sorbonne is organizing a talk by Esteve Riambau, director of the Filmoteca de Catalunya, entitled “The Filmoteca de Catalunya: managing the film heritage and research perspectives”, that will take place on June 19th at 2 p.m.

'Spain in a day', by Isabel Coixet (81 min) | Thursday, 15th June, 7 p.m.

Isabel Coixet’s new project seeks a sincere portrait of the daily lives of Spanish people. To do it, the director has put together a story based on the nearly 23,000 videos that people from all over the country sent her anonymously on 24th October 2015. Of these, Coixet has used just over 400 to get a plural, unique view, close to reality.

'Estiu 1993', by Carla Simón (96 min) | Friday, 16th June at 9:30 p.m.

The first feature-length film by Carla Simón is the autobiographical story of Frida (Laia Artigas), a six-year-old girl who has to go through a process of adaptation after the death of her mother. The story won the prize for the best debut at the Berlinale 2017 and for best film at this year’s Malaga Film Festival.

'Lesa Humanitat', by Héctor Faver (109 min) | Saturday, 17th June at 9:30 p.m.

The Dífferent festival is also presenting a world premiere the documentary Lesa Humanitat, the first work by Héctor Faver since 2000, when he presented Invocació. This not-for-profit documentary is intended to give a voice and a platform to the victims of the Franco regime, to collect their testimonies to put an end to the indifference of much of society, and to restore the right to memory and justice.

'Cerca de tu casa', by Eduard Cortés (95 min) | Sunday, 18th June at 9:30 p.m.

Since 2007, many Spanish families have been evicted because of the economic crisis. Director Eduard Cortés portrays this situation through a fictional story with music by the well-known Sílvia Pérez Cruz, who is also the lead actress in it.

'Vivir y otras ficciones', by Jo Sol (84 min) | Monday, 19th June at 7 p.m.

Jo Sol – the acronym of Jordi Solé – continues his investigations based on a hybrid between fiction and documentary. In Vivir y otras ficciones, the director places his camera in front of Pepe – an activist affected by functional diversity – and Antonio – an ex-pilot with mental disorders. Both will end up as two characters who will swap places to change their view of life. The production is accompanied by the music of El niño de Elche.

During its ten-year life, the Festival has set out to show independent Spanish film abroad. As is customary, in this edition there is a large Catalan presence.
