'Joan Margarit was born in the La Segarra region, in Catalonia. He first published poetry in Spanish, but after four books decided to write in Catalan. In 2008 he received the Premio Nacional de Poesía del Estado Español, Spain’s highest literary award. 'Love Is a Place' (Bloodaxe, 2016) is the third translation by Anna Crowe, and includes all the poems from three Catalan collections: 'No era lluny ni difícil' (It Wasn’t Far Away or Difficult, 2010), 'Es perd el senyal' (The Signal Is Fading, 2012) and 'Estimar és un lloc' (From Where to Begin to Love Again, 2014).

'Five O’Clock Verses of 2017 showcases two welcome returns to StAnza. A.B. Jackson last read at StAnza almost a decade ago. Since then, he’s been awarded first place in the Edwin Morgen International Poetry Competition, and has seen his second collection, The 'Wilderness Years', named as a Poetry Book Society Recommendation. Meanwhile it’s been a full twelve years since the Catalan poet Joan Margarit graced the StAnza stage. An acclaimed poet, who has twice won Spain’s National Critics Award, Margarit published his third collection in English 'Love is a Place 'with Bloodaxe in 2016. His translator, Anna Crowe, will read alongside Margarit, presenting her translations of his work.

In partnership with Newcastle Centre for the Literary Arts.'
