Author Marta Orriols and translator Mara Faye Lethem selected for Art Omi Translation Lab 2019

In early November, Art Omi: Writers hosts an annual Translation Lab, in which four English language translators are invited to work alongside the writers whose work they translate. The focused residency provides an integral stage of refinement, allowing translators to dialogue with the writers about text-specific questions. The Translation Lab emphasizes translation as a means towards cultural exchange.

Tenor saxophonist and clarinetist Lluc Casares performs in New York City and in Philadelphia

Devoted to music since a very early age, Lluc grew up surrounded by the sounds of Sonny Stitt and Louis Armstrong, but also the Afro-Cuban All-Stars and Earth Wind and Fire- to name a few. His father, Pau Casares, was his very first clarinet teacher and mentor. Lluc lived in New York City as part of the prestigious Artist Diploma Ensemble at the Juilliard School of Music.

San Francisco Dance Film Festival celebrates its landmark 10th anniversary! Celebrating a decade of reframing dance, the 2019 festival will run November 2-10 at venues across San Francisco, and include over 120 films featuring both North American and world premieres. With documentaries, live performance captures from the world's greatest stages, shorts, panels, and live performances, the festival is organized into 30 varied programs.

ALTA42 translates from the Catalan!

Each year, nearly 500 ALTA members, literary translators, writers, students, readers, teachers, publishers, and other professionals from all regions of the United States and abroad gather for a vibrant three days in continually changing venues across the country, and, occasionally, in Canada and Mexico. For forty years, the ALTA conference has provided the largest gathering dedicated exclusively to the work of literary translation.

Works by composer Marc Migó at National Sawdust

The BluePrint Fellowship, a new National Sawdust initiative in collaboration with Juilliard, is a dual-track career, project mentoring, and commissioning course developed to support student composers. For the fellowship’s inaugural season, Juilliard composition students will present their commissioned BluePrint projects, for an exciting mix of voice, dance, electronics, and chamber ensemble, performed by both Juilliard students and the National Sawdust Ensemble.

"Truck Driver Haikus/Haikús del Camioner" by Dolors Miquel, translated by Clyde Monehun, now available from Francis Boutle Publishers

Intrigued by the aesthetic and philosophical possibilities of the haiku, Dolors Miquel introduces "elements of our own daily life to the typically nature-centered themes” of the classic Japanese version in "Truck Driver Haikus/Haikús del Camioner," now available in an English translation by Clyde Moneyhun.

The Importance of Music in Life

Antoni Tolmos, is a pianist and composer born in Lleida (Spain) in 1970. He has a degree in Piano, Musical Language and Music Theory and he is Doctor in philosophy and Education. He is expert in creativity and Music Improvisation (Doctoral thesis about piano improvisation as an educational tool). he is Certified Professional Coach. He is currently working at Universitat de Lleida and at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona as a professor in Music education, being at some stage the been Vicedean of Faculty of Education of the Universitat de Lleida.
