Catalan cinema at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and Harvard

Spanish cinema started in Catalonia with two important schools: the realistic school led by Fructuós Gelabert; and the fantastic trend represented by Segundo de Chomón. After the silence forced upon Catalan cinema during Franco's dictatorship in the 40's and 50's, it started to regain an important role in the film industry with the Barcelona School in the mid 60's. Presently Catalan Cinema enjoys a strong recognition thanks to the works of well-known Catalan directors such as Bigas Luna, Ventura Pons and Isabel Coixet, among others.

Ventura Pons: Cultural Week at the University of Colorado Denver

The University of Colorado Denver´s Modern Languages, and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences invite the Denver community to participate in a three-day event of cultural activities centering on the works of Catalan filmmaker Ventura Pons. The keynote speaker is the prestigious Catalan scholar and Stanford Professor Joan Ramon Resina. The book Ventura Pons: Una mirada excepcional desde el cine catalán will be presented at a round table and four feature films by Ventura Pons will be screened for the first time in Denver.

The Enric Granados Centennial: upcoming concerts in New York City

Enric Granados (1867-1916) spent the final months of his life in New York. His visit to the United States included some of the most important artistic triumphs of his life—the World Premiere of his opera, GOYESCAS, at the Metropolitan Opera, solo and chamber music recitals with cellist Pau Casals, recordings for the Duo-Art Reproducing Piano, the premiere of his symphonic poem, DANTE, by the Chicago Symphony, and a recital at the White House.

VII Symposium of Catalan Language, Literature, and Culture at the University of Missouri

The VII Symposium of Catalan Language, Literature, and Culture will take place on April 15, 2016 at the University of Missouri. Two experts in Catalan literature will discuss nationalisms and literature in XIX century, whilst students of Catalan at the Department of Romance Languages will debate on Catalan culture and identity.

Sant Jordi at Georgetown University

Celebrate Sant Jordi, the Day of Books and Roses, with The Catalan lectureship at Georgetown University! The events include a translation seminar by Mary Ann Newman and a translation slam. A presentation of Newman's English version of Private Life by Josep Maria Sagarra (Archipelago Books, 2015) will take place the day after, followed by a roundtable with Catalan journalists on American politics for a European audience, and Herois, a film by Catalan director Pau Freixas.

(In)verse: Poets Translate Each Other: Melcion Mateu and Rowan Ricardo Phillips

To celebrate National Poetry Month, hear from poets who translate each other's work. Flávia Rocha and Idra Novey will read in Portuguese and English; and Melcion Mateu and Rowan Ricardo Phillips will read in Catalan and English. Both pairs will discuss their creative process and the responsibilities of collaboration and translation.
