Axaxaxas Mlö by playwright Xavi Morató, staged reading in New York

Performing.  New York, 15/06/2019

Alba and Bruna are happy together. Genuinely happy. But happiness never lasts, especially on a stage. And especially when–in that stage–there is a playwright reading the stage directions out loud, and when that playwright has to tell a story, and when that story has to be packed with conflict.

The playwright, thus, condemns the couple to have a relationship that people will never understand nor approve of. A forbidden relationship that even Alba is against. The most amazing and unexpected and shocking forbidden relationship ever, something that the playwright is so very proud of having come up with. But then again, he knows that this is not true. He knows that he did not create anything, that all stories existed before him and that he rather discovered this one. Created by him or not, the playwright thinks that it's a pretty darn good story, and that it looks quite rare. And he's about to tell it.

“We can’t create anything. We can only discover.”

About the playwright:

Xavi Morató is a Barcelona-based playwright, stage director and screenplay writer born in 1983. He premiered more than 20 plays, full-length and short form. His plays have been performed in a dozen Barcelona theaters, and also in other Spanish cities (Madrid, Valencia, Malaga) and in Latin America (Costa Rica, Peru, Mexico). He received different awards for his written plays, the most relevant of them being the Premi Born de Teatre in 2014, which is the most prestigious award for an unproduced play in Spain. Xavi also writes for the famous satirical magazine El Jueves, where he's been collaborating uninterruptedly since 2006. Xavi graduated from the Universitat Pompeu Fabra with a Communications Degree and he also studied Stage Direction and Playwriting in Barcelona's Institut del Teatre. He writes mainly comedies, but also dramas and experimental plays, and he is long experienced in the musical genre as most of the full-length plays that he premiered are musicals.

CIMIENTOS presents texts with visionary craftsmanship. At core of the program is also the diversity and inclusion with which Cimientos has been curated. 19 years ago, IATI Theater began a steadfast commitment to the playwright. Hundreds of playwrights have graced the program. This year will be the first time that all 10 play readings are performed in less than a week. Cimientos, Spanish for “foundations,” now calls upon the most important member of this developmental step: you, the audience. We will from June 12th to June 16th, display 10 plays that have been years in the making and that are now primed for a public reception. We welcome you to help us make these plays all that they can be.
