Catalan poets in New York: two readings

Literature.  New York,  31/05/2019

Imagine a book of hours condensed into a book of minutes: that is the project of the compact lyrical prose poems found in Gemma Gorga's Book of Minutes, the first English-language translation of this emerging poet, widely known and loved in her native Catalonia yet little known outside it. Sharon Dolin, translator and an award winning poet herself, and Ernest Farrés will join Gemma Gorga for the readings.

Gemma Gorga is an award-winning poet who has published six volumes of poetry in Catalan. Her collection of prose poems, Book of Minutes, has just been published in a bilingual edition in the Field Translation Series by Oberlin University Press. This is the first volume of her work translated into English.

Ernest Farrés, an editor at the Barcelona-based newspaper La Vanguardia, is the author of six poetry collections. His collection Edward Hopper (Graywolf Press, 2009), translated by Lawrence Venuti, won the Robert Fagles Translation Prize.

Ernest Farrés and Gemma Gorga translated into Catalan an anthology of Edward Hirsch’s poems (published in Barcelona in 2017).

Sharon Dolin is the translator of Gemma Gorga’s Book of Minutes, for which she has received translation grants from PEN and the Institut Ramond Llull. She is also the author of six books of poetry, most recently Manual for Living (University of Pittsburgh Press, 2016). Her 2008 volume Burn and Dodge received the AWP Donald Hall Prize in Poetry.

Aixeco la persiana perquè pugui entrar la llum. Enretiro la cortina perquè pugui entrar la llum. Tanco els ulls perquè pugui entrar la llum.

I raise the blinds so light may enter. I part the curtains so light may enter. I close my eyes so light may enter.
