A staged reading of UPSTAIRS NEIGHBORS by playwright and filmmaker Cesc Gay

Performing.  New York, 03/05/2019

Without a doubt, one of the greatest and most ambitious adventures any of us can experience in life is living as part of a couple. A major challenge full of adversity and obstacles, the struggle is daily, the trenches are endless, and consolation for the wounds and scratches suffered is often scarce or unhealthy. Even so, inexplicably, we men and women keep trying. And that’s why I’m convinced that only with irony and a sense of humor is it possible to write about this tragedy, which has pursued us since the dawn of time and we cannot get free of.

And what do upstairs neighbors have to do with all of this? Well, they’re the ones to blame that you are reading these lines now. A couple years ago, some new neighbors moved into the apartment upstairs from where my family was living. We soon started hearing strange noises at all hours, always followed by a great variety of moans and panting. It certainly served as inspiration for me and they unintentionally ended up giving me the gift of what turned into my first play for the stage. – Cesc Gay

Cesc Gay

Born in Barcelona in 1967, Cesc Gay is the director and screenwriter of the feature films: “Truman” (2015), “A Gun in Each Hand”, (2012) “V.O.S” (2009) “Ficción” (2006), “In the City” (2003), “Nico and Dani” (2000) and “Hotel Room” (1998). Currently, he has directed and written the six-episode series: “Félix” (2018). He has had his stage debut as playwright and theater director of the successful comedy “Neighbors Upstairs” (Els veins de dalt) (2016).

It became a phenomenon everywhere: Spain (185,000 spectators), Argentina (160,000 spectators, still running), Chile (30,000), Colombia (40.000 spectators), Portugal (20.000 still running), Mexico (still running), Panama, Caracas…Miami, Paris and Sao Paulo premieres are planned for the next season.

Cesc Gay is noteworthy due to his profound look at characters, his irony and sharp sense sense of humor when it comes to reflecting human weaknesses. He portrays his characters with deep simplicity: adolescents discovering themselves, twenty-somethings in a hurry, thirty-somethings with doubts, forty-somethings in crisis… A writer who x-rays emotions with a contained, sincere, delicate look focused on the issues that define his generation.
