Xavier Marrades's short film 'Misericórdia', screening at the New Directors/New Films Festival

Cinema.  New York, 07/04/2019

Filmed around Brazil’s Itaparica Island, this oneiric documentary evokes the rich, complicated ancestry of Bahia—considered the African heart of Brazil—through the dreams of its present-day inhabitants.

Celebrating its 48th edition in 2019, the New Directors/New Films festival introduces New York audiences to the work of emerging filmmakers from around the world. The Festival celebrates filmmakers who represent the present and anticipate the future of cinema: daring artists whose work pushes the envelope and is never what you’d expect. Presented by the Film Society of Lincoln Center and the MThe Museum of Modern Art.

Misericórdia is a portrait of a community through the dreams of it's inhabitants. Xavier Marrades spent three months on the island of Itaparica in the state of Bahia, Brazil, gathering the dreams of people while filming scenes of their everyday lives. Soon that mixture of dreams and documentary triggered what could be called a third reality that belongs to the realm of magic: Misericórdia is a dream of dreams, evocative of the enchantment and ancestry of Bahia, the African heart of Brazil.
