Bassist Alexis Cuadrado's live score on the silent film SHOES, New York premiere

Music.  New York, 05/12/2018

The score will accompany a screening of the iconic 1916 silent film Shoes directed by the American pioneer female filmmaker Lois Weber. Shoes follows the story of a young woman who struggles to replace her only pair of shoes, which are falling to pieces, while supporting a family of six with a deadbeat father. According to the composer, “the score is in conversation with the film across a century’s divide on the fight for women’s rights, poverty and workers’ rights, and how these issues continue to plague our world today. This piece is a statement that helps us reflect on how we do or don’t evolve as a society.”

With bassist Alexis Cuadrado, vocalist Kavita Shah, trumpeter Linda Briceño, cellist Amy Kang, pianist Luis Perdomo, and vibraphonist Christos Rafalides, and drummer Shirazette Tinnin.

Barcelona-born bassist Alexis Cuadrado is one of the most sought after musicians in New York. Though he has long been a distinguished sideman, Cuadrado’s output as a composer has also been significant in recent years, showcasing a distinctive voice that combines improvisation with through-composed music that draws on jazz, experimental, and flamenco influences.
