Monika Zgustová is an award-winning author whose literary works have been published in 10 languages. She was born in Prague. She studied comparative literature at the universities of Chicago and Illinois. She lives in Barcelona and writes for El Pais, The Nation and other magazines.
Monika Zgustová has published nine books, including novels, short stories, a play, and a biography. Her novel The Silent Woman (2005, published in English by Feminist Press in 2014) was one of two runners-up for the National Award for the Novel, given by the Spanish Ministry of Culture. Zgustová has also received the Ciutat de Barcelona and the Mercè Rodoreda awards in Spain, and the Gratias Agist Prize given by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Prague. Her other novel translated into English is Goya's Glass (Feminist Press, 2012). As a translator of Czech and Russian literature—including Havel, Kundera, Hrabal, Hasek, Akhmatova, Tsvetaeva, and Babel—Zgustová is credited with bringing major 20th-century writers into Spanish and Catalan.
