Music.  Georgetown University, Wa DC, 18/09/2018

Bassist Alexis Cuadrado premieres an original live score on the silent film Shoes (1916) directed by the American pioneer female filmmaker Lois Weber. Cuadrado will perform the score with a band featuring: Kavita Shah (voice), Nadje Noordhuis (trumpet), Amy Kang (cello), Shirazette Tinnin (drums), Christos Rafalides (vibraphone) Luis Perdomo (piano) and Cuadrado himself of bass. The screening and premiere will be followed by a discussion led by Sky Sitney, Program Director of the Film and Media Studies Program at Georgetown University.

The score will accompany a screening. Shoes follows the story of a young woman who struggles to replace her only pair of shoes, which are falling to pieces, while supporting a family of six with a deadbeat father. According to the composer, “the score is in conversation with the film across a century’s divide on the fight for women’s rights, poverty and workers’ rights, and how these issues continue to plague our world today. This piece is a statement that helps us reflect on how we do or don’t evolve as a society.”

The screening and premiere will be followed by a discussion with the composer, led by Sky Sitney, Program Director of the Film and Media Studies Program at Georgetown University.

There will also be a New York Premiere on December 5th at Jazz @ Lincoln Center.
