Institut Ramon LLull

Lyrikline adds fifteen new Catalan authors, among them five classics

Literature.  Barcelona, 01/02/2018

The Goethe Institut and the Institut Ramon Llull have organized a presentation ceremony on Thursday 1 February at 7.30 pm at the Goethe Institut with poets Enric Casasses and Sabine Scho

With the aim of giving Catalan poets international visibility, the Institut Ramon Llull (IRL) has been collaborating with Haus für Poesie for 10 years, materializing in the presence of more than 30 Catalan poets on the international platform Lyrikline.org. This year, coinciding with the anniversary and the new push given to Lyrikline.org as a tool for the internationalization of Catalan literature, ten new contemporary poets are being incorporated, and for the first time five classic voices as well, among them Josep Palau i Fabre.

Lyrikline.org is the digital poetry platform of reference at the international level. It was created in Berlin in 1999 with the aim of promoting poetry recited by the poets themselves internationally. At present you can hear 11,129 poems by 1,249 poets in 80 languages and read the originals and their 16,585 translations. For the first time five classic authors are among the Catalan authors to be added during 2018: Josep Palau i Fabre, Josep Carner, Salvador Espriu, Pere Quart and Josep Maria de Sagarra. The work of ten contemporary poets will likewise be added: Maria Cabrera, Mireia Calafell, Teresa Colom, Anna Gual, Jordi Julià, Jordi Llavina, Dolors Miquel, Eduard Sanahuja, Maria Sevilla and Antònia Vicens.

You will be able to listen to all of them in their own voices thanks to Catalunya Ràdio’s collaboration on this project, which has made the recordings of the contemporary authors possible; the Fundació Palau, which has provided the material referring to the authors, and the Biblioteca de Catalunya, which has made the presence of the rest of the classic authors now being included possible. The collaboration with these and other institutions will ensure the ongoing presence of classic Catalan poets on Lyrikline

To celebrate this milestone, this coming Thursday 1 February a poetry reading will be held at the Goethe Institut’s Barcelona offices coorganized by the IRL and the Goethe Institut. German poet Sabine Scho and Enric Casasses, poets already included on the platform, will recite their verses. Sabine Scho’s poems can be read translated into Catalan and will be screened simultaneously. Casasses and Scho will talk with the director of the Institut Ramon Llull’s Department of Literature and the Humanities Izaskun Arretxe about the project and the literary discoveries it has led them to. The ceremony will feature simultaneous interpretation.

Over the course of the event Josep Palau i Fabre’s profile on the platform will be presented and some verses will be heard.

Sabine Scho, born in Ochtrup, North Rhine-Westphalia, in 1970, currently lives in Berlin after having spent time in Münster, Hamburg and São Paulo. Almost all of her texts are positioned in the border space between photographs and images.

The publisher Kookbooks has published two poetry anthologies and a book with prose miniatures: Album and farben, both from 2008, and Tiere in Architektur, from 2013. The magazine The Origin of Senses was the result of an artistic intervention at the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin (Berlin Botanical Museum) with drawings by Andreas Töpfert. It is currently a travelling exhibition that has already been shown at the Cultural House Nottbeck, the Museum of Zoology of the University of Göttingen and the Sylt Foundation.

Sabine Scho was recognized with the Anke Bennholdt-Thomsen-Lyrikpreis from the Schiller Foundation in 2012; she received a residence grant from the Goethe-Institut Finnland in Tampere in 2015 and another in 2017 from the Ministry of the Environment in Vilm.

Enric Casasses (Barcelona, 1951). A poet of unclassifiable and genuine work, a contemporary troubadour, narrator and dramatist. An occasional translator and reclaimer of forgotten texts.

The intellectual son of the Barcelona of the last years of the Franco regime, where he had an active presence in the framework of the counterculture, Enric Casasses published his first two books of poetry, La bragueta encallada (1972) and La cosa aquella (1982), in alternative editions. In 1991 the publisher Empúries published a second edition of La cosa aquella that coincided with the beginning of its recognition among readers and critics. To date he has written over 25 books of poetry and received awards for: No hi érem (Premi de la Crítica in 1993), Calç (Premi Carles Riba in 1996) and Plaça Raspall (Premi Joan Alcover in 1998), for example.
