After making their debut with Univers Evans, which persuaded the AMJM to name them best group 2011 and Jaç magazine to vote it album of the year, the Free Spirits Big Band returned in 2012 with a new release: Menta, diari sonor. Their sophomore album is much more mature effort, featuring a more unified sound thanks to the band’s development at their weekly rehearsals.

The repertoire on Menta, diari sonor (“Mint, sound diary”) is completely different from its predecessor, which took its inspiration from the music of Bill Evans. In this case, the nexus between the tracks is the musical director himself, David Mengual, who reveals his sound diary, the tunes that have accompanied him over the years. This he does through his band, in a recording that features large helpings of improv and sounds that are as fresh and natural as, well, mint.
