Lisbon hosts the first of the events about Ramon Llull to be held abroad in 2016

Literature.  Lisboa,  18/01/2016

Ramon Llull (1232-1316) is one of the most outstanding figures of Catalan culture of all time, due to the originality of his thinking and the quality of his writing. His work, written principally in Catalan and Latin, and probably in Arabic too, has been hugely influential among great philosophers from the 14th century to the present day. His books have been published and translated into dozens of languages and his philosophy has been studied in the most prestigious academic and cultural centres in the western world.

The academic ceremony in Lisbon, organized jointly by the University of Lisbon and the Institut Ramon Llull, which will take place on 18th January, will begin at 6 p.m. in the ‘Sala Noble’ of the Rector’s building. The University of Lisbon is currently the only one in Portugal offering courses in Catalan language and culture.

The event will be presided over by António Feijó, vice-rector of the University of Lisbon (UL), and there will be speeches by Paulo Farmhouse Alberto, deacon of the Faculty of Letters (UL); Àlex Susanna, director of the Institut Ramon Llull, from Barcelona; Ayres do Nascimiento, medievalist and professor of the Faculty of Letters (UL), and Luisa Costa Gomes, writer and author of Vida de Ramón (a fictionalized biography of Llull, published in 1991 by Dom Quixote).

During the event, a selection of verses from the Llibre d’amic e amat, Ramon Llull’s best known and most translated work, will also be recited, in Catalan and Portuguese.

This event is part of the commemorative programme of Llull Year, promoted by the Generalitat de Catalunya’s Department of Culture, which has planned a broad programme of cultural activities (conferences, exhibitions, concerts, shows, publishing and educational projects), in Catalonia and abroad, with the aim of publicizing every aspect of the life and work of Ramon Llull.

The Lisbon conference is the first of the events of Llull Year to be held abroad, and it will continue with other cultural activities in different European capital cities, including Paris, London, Berlin and Rome.
