The Palau de la Generalitat hosts the inaugural event of Llull Year

Culture.  Barcelona,  30/11/2015

On Monday, 30th November Artur Mas, acting President of the Generalitat, accompanied by the Minister of Culture, Ferran Mascarell, will preside over the inaugural event of Llull Year, commemorated from November 2015 to 2016, to mark the 700th anniversary of the death of one of the greatest exponents of European culture and thought.

The event, which will take place at 7 p.m. in the Saló Sant Jordi in the Palau de la Generalitat, will begin with the speeches of the Minister of Culture, Ferran Mascarell, and the curator of Llull Year, Joan Santanach. Then, Professor Michela Pereira, a member of the Società Internazionale per lo Studio del Medievo Latino, from Florence, will give the lecture “Ramon Llull, from the Island to the World”. After that, Francina Armengol, the president of the Government of the Balearic Islands, will speak. Artur Mas, acting president of the Generalitat, will close the speeches. To end with, the baritone Joan Pons will sing three poems by Ramon Llull, set to music by Antoni Parera Fons, with piano accompaniment by Joana Pons.

The declaration of Llull Year was passed by the Government of the Generalitat in March 2014. As part of the commemoration, organized by the Department of Culture, there will be conferences, exhibitions, concerts, and editorial, academic and educational projects, to publicize every aspect of the life and work of Ramon Llull.

The originality of his thinking and the quality of his literature has made Ramon Llull the most outstanding figure of all time in the world of Catalan culture. His work, written chiefly in Catalan and Latin, and probably also in Arabic, has had a huge influence on great philosophers, from the fourteenth century to the present day. His books have been published and translated into dozens of languages in the most prestigious cultural and educational centres in the world.

Francina Armengol, President of the Government of the Balearic Islands, will also take part
