Joan Sales’s classic Uncertain Glory will be in German bookshops on 28th September

Literature.  Barcelona,  18/09/2015

This autumn German readers will be able to read one of the classics of Catalan literature: Uncertain Glory, by Joan Sales. A novel of ethics and ideas, considered one of the best books about the Civil War, Uncertain Glory will be in German bookshops on 28th September, published by Hanser and translated by Kirsten Brandt.

Hanser is a German publishing house with a prestigious catalogue that includes classics of 20th-century literature and internationally renowned contemporary authors such as Patrick Modiano, Mo Yan, Herta Müller, Elias Canetti, Czesław Miłosz and Yasunari Kawabata.

Brandt has been a translator for many years. She translated Voices of Pamano, by Jaume Cabré, which became a bestseller in Germany at the time of Catalonia’s participation as guest culture at the Frankfurt Book Fair.

The German translation comes after the huge acknowledgment that Peter Bush’s English translation of the novel achieved (Uncertain Glory, MacLehose Press, 2014) and which the weekly The Economist included in the list of the ten best fictional novels of last year.

Private Life in English

Besides the boom in translations of Catalan classics comes the publication in the United States of America of Private Life, by Josep Maria de Sagarra, planned for November. It is the first translation into English of this author and it is by Mary Ann Newman, the translator of, among others, Quim Monzó, Joan Maragall and Narcís Comadira. It will be published by Archipelago Books.

Both translations merely confirm the success that Catalan literature is experiencing with regard to the international dissemination of its classics.
