On Tuesday Gemma Gorga and Francesc Serés shared the experiences as writers in residence abroad which they have had in the United States, India, France and Ireland as part of the Diàlegs al Llull. The literary critic Bernat Puigtobella, who acted as chairman, asked them if at any time they had had to explain what Catalan culture is, and they both said no.
Gemma Gorga said that “the great success of those writers’ residences is to socialise, to be able to share moments with each other, over lunch or dinner, since that allows you to understand different ways of coping with the creative challenge of literature”. She recalled her time at a writers residence in India for three months: “I remember that it was 42 degrees centigrade and everything was difficult and quite different. Ordeals of that kind force you to face yourself and search inside yourself”.
For his part, Francesc Serés said that “at the prestigious writers in residence at Ledig House in New York I managed to write almost nothing, since I was living and sharing experiences with writers from all over the world. I had an overdose of people, but all those visions of the world ended up becoming literary material, one way or another”.
The Institut Ramon Llull offers Catalan authors an opportunity to be a writer in residence at Ledig House in New York as part of the Writers OMI programme. The deadline for submitting applications is Friday 30 May. Moreover, the IRL is offering aid for translators who are working on versions of works of Catalan literature for stays in Catalonia of between two and six weeks.
Both of them point out that they are enriching personally and professionally
