This shipwreck was immortalized by Théodore Géricault in the famous canvas ‘The Raft of the Medusa’, preserved in the Louvre Museum. The italian writer Alessandro Baricco narrates these events in the novel Oceano Mare, into the chapter titled ‘El Ventre del Mar’.

Synopsis

June, 1816. The frigate called ‘Alliance’, of the french Navy, got stuck at the Senegal coast.

As the lifeboats were not enough to take in all the crewmen, a precarious raft is built where 147 men must board by force: soldiers, marines, some passengers and a few official members. The expected plan was that the lifeboats towed the raft to the coast but the panic and the confusion got the better of the convoy and finally they cut the rope, deserting the raft. The hunger, the inclemency of the sea, the madness and a fierce fight took place on that raft adrift.

A horror that lasted for days and days.

From those 147 men only 9 saved their lives. Between them was Savigny, a flawless official doctor and Thomas, a rebel private. One against the other, they assume the situation showing different attitudes to survive.

Director's filmography

AGUSTÍ VILLARONGA (Palma, 1953). One of the most personal and secret voices in European cinema. Always a transgressor, he moves along brave and unforgiving paths. Sometimes he travels through genre cinema but frequently overflows it, rigorously exploring little-frequented territories, placing himself without palliative in the part of evil and death as exorcism and deep reflection. His films have been awarded at Festivals in Berlin, Cannes, Montreal, San Sebastián, Tokyo ... and twice he has been selected to represent Spain and Mexico at the Hollywood Oscars.

Part of his filmography are After the glass (1985), The child of the moon (1989), The sea (2000), Aro Tolbukhin (2002), Pa negre (2010), The king of Havana (2015), Uncertain Glory (2017) and Born a King (2018).

“A conflict that evokes the wound of man, where it shows the worst of the cruelties and the sweetest of the pieties”
