Pere Jaume Borrell takes part in a screening cycle programmed around the Ana Mendieta exhibition in Paris

Arts.  Paris, 16/11/2018

The Covered in Time and History film exhibition dedicated to Cuban American artist Ana Mendieta runs from 16th October 2018 to 27th January 2019 at the Jeu de Paume visual arts centre in Paris. A range of activities have been organised around the exhibition, including screenings of short films by Catalan artist and poet, Pere Jaume Borrell i Guinart, known as Perejaume. On 16th November, the artist will present his work and create an intervention for the audience. Supported by the Institut Ramon Llull (IRL).

Ana Mendieta is considered one of the most prolific and innovative post-war artists. Her extensive oeuvre comprises drawings, installations, performances, photographs, sculptures and films and was produced between 1971-1985.

The Covered in Time and History exhibition at the Jeu de Paume examines recurrent themes like memory, history, culture, ritual and the passage of time, often shown in the relationship between the body and the earth. In a natural environment, these show her interest in the four elements: earth, air, fire and water.

Perejaume will lead a black-out session, a reading allowing audiences to interact with a selection of his short films and Mendieta’s work. Like Ana, Perejaume works on the culture of location: he opens, cultivates and works it. This praxis, which he refers to as ‘agraireté’, germinates all kinds of poetic ideas.

The Jeu de Paume, Paris is an internationally renowned public arts centre with which IRL has worked on several occasions, notably on Antoni Muntadas and Jordi Colomer exhibitions.

Born in Sant Pol de Mar in 1957, Perejaume has received the Visual Arts Award (2005) and Spanish National Plastic Arts Award (2006) and Graphics Award (2007).

Metaphor and metonymy lie at the heart of his aesthetics, in which he seeks a fundamental unity between the world and words, and works with words and plastic materials, using apparently different forms of communication, and creating realities by mixing the natural with the artistic.

The cycle will discuss work by Maya Deren and Ursula Reuter Christiansen, Antonieta Zwirchmayr Xiana do Teixeiro, Carolina Astudillo, Danielle Jaeggi, Chantal Akerman, Carolee Schneemann, María Beatty, Sarah Pucill, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Silvia Gruner or Anne-Marie Faure.

It’s curated by Marina Vinyes Albes and Arnau Vilaró Moncasí.
