Sergi Belbel, the first Catalan playwright in the repertoire of the Comédie-Française in Paris

Performing.  Paris, 29/11/2017

Després de la pluja (translated into French as Après la pluie), by the playwright Sergi Belbel, has proved a big hit in France, where it is now being performed at the Théâtre du Vieux-Colombier in Paris from 29 November to 7 January 2018. This is the first work by a Catalan to be put on by the prestigious Comédie-Française. In addition, Belbel will be present at an event on 1 December chaired by Laurent Mulheisen.

Written in 1993, Després de la pluja is being performed once again in France, on this occasion directed by Lilo Baur and as part of the repertoire of the world-renowned Comédie-Française. The company, the first and only one to be owned by the French government, is among the few to have its own group of actors. Its extensive repertoire already included the work by Belbel, which is being performed at the Théâtre du Vieux-Colombier in Paris, one of the three belonging to the Comédie-Française.

Sergi Belbel (Terrassa, 1963) is the first Catalan playwright to be included in the repertoire of the Comédie-Française, as announced at the press conference to present the season. Belbel made his debut as a playwright in 1986, but it was with Carícies, also translated and performed in French as Caresses, that he made a name for himself in 1991. Between 2005 and 2013, he was the director of the National Theatre of Catalonia.

About Després de la pluja

Some members of staff of a major financial company are smoking on the rooftop of a 49-storey skyscraper. Against the grey and impersonal backdrop of the large corporation, anxious, amusing and wry characters emerge as the play advances.

Following performances in works by Nikolai Gogol, Marcel Aymé and Federico García Lorca with Troupe, Lilo Baur has chosen Sergi Belbel’s work, which offers considerable room for actors to play with the dialogue. The cast will consist of the actors Véronique Vella, Cécile Brune, Alexandre Pavloff, Clotilde Bayser, Nazim Boudjenah, Sébastien Pouderoux and Anna Cervinka.

The staging of Després de la pluja by Marion Virrei won the Prix Molière in 1999
