'Sous-sol', by Josep Maria Benet i Jornet, is being performed in Paris

Performing.  Paris, 30/10/2017

The Cie La Traverse is taking its show 'Sous-sol' to the Théâtre de l’Epée de Bois in Paris. Between 30 October and 11 November, the French public will have the opportunity to see one of the darkest works by the Catalan playwright Josep Maria Benet i Jornet, translated by Denise Boyer and adapted by Hervé Petit.

'Sous-sol' (in English ‘underground’) was published in 2008 and was presented in France a year later thanks to Denise Boyer’s translation for Les Éditions de l'Amandier. The author, Josep Maria Benet i Jornet (Barcelona, 1940), is one of the most important playwrights working in Catalan today and is regarded as the leading light behind the renewal of Catalan theatre in the 1970s. His works have been translated into a number of languages, earning him both a presence abroad and international renown.

The Compagnie La Traverse, founded in 1992 by the actor and director Hervé Petit, has decided to stage Sous-sol, one of the author’s darkest works. Part of a trilogy, it comes after Deux femmes qui dansent, which the theatre company adapted earlier, and before Comment le dire?, which the company will be creating in 2018. The Théâtre de l’Epée de Bois in Paris will be hosting a total of 14 performances of 'Sous-sol' on its stage.

The show presents a reflection on evil in the form of a thriller that opens with a dialogue between two men who seem not to know each other. Confidences and revelations emerge as they converse underground, ending with a final confession.

Sous-sol is directed by Catherine Perrotte and Hervé Petit and performed by the company founder himself, Petit, and Antonio Labati.
