Culture, Technology, and Society Collide: Big Bang Data at MIT Museum

Culture.  30/10/2017

The data we generate on our phones, sensors, social networks, photographs, and purchases can be stored and processed to reveal patterns. But what are they for? And who uses them? Big Bang Data explores social and technological innovation in the face of today's political, economic, and cultural challenges.

In today's digital age, data is generated, processed, and interpreted in a way that ultimately changes the way we live, make decisions, and perceive.

Originally created by the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB), this conglomerate of installations has already traveled to London, Mexico City, Prague, and Singapore. In this iteration, MIT research will add to the exhibition, with data going from the sewer system's keys to human health and behavior, to facial recognition and social justice, to the impact of global warming on sea levels.

Commissioned by Olga Subirós and José Luis de Vicente, Big Bang Data was produced with the participation of Chirstopher Baker, Chris Jordan, Ingo Gunther, Erik Kessels, David Bowen, Aaron, Koblin, Eric Fischer, Near Future Laboratory, and Bestiario, as well as numerous researchers, activists, designers, educators, analysts, cartographers, engineers, economists, architects, communicators, programmers, journalists, etcetera.

Olga Subirós, whose works often focus on twenty-first-century culture, has participated in Spain's most prestigious museums, including Barcelona's CCCB and MACBA. Besides working as a commissioner, she is an architect and designer, having designed Spain's 2011 Venice Biennial Pavilion for Dora García.

José Luis Vicente is a commissioner, writer, and investigator on cultural spaces involving technology, social innovation, art, and design. He is currently commissioner for Sónar+D in Barcelona and for the FutureEverything Festival in Manchester.
